A Stay At the TWA Hotel: Totally Worth the Flight Delay

Is there anything worse than a flight being delayed for hours or simply being cancelled?

Yes. Car trouble.

Basically, transportation woes are a huge pain, especially when you have literally no control over what happens.

A few months ago, my husband and I both had to be in New York City for work so we went together. We had a fun couple of days, thanks to help from Grandma, but the trip home hit a snag.

A 14 hour flight delay.

Yes, you read that correctly. 14 hours of delay. Not a cancellation.

So, I pulled up my Hotel Tonight app ** to find a place to stay for the night, and one of the options was the TWA Hotel.

I had vague memories of someone mentioning it to me, but didn’t really know what it was about. However, since it was literally attached to the airport, we booked our stay.

Ya’ll, it was an experience. Our extra night in New York could have been spent in agony, but instead turned out to be an amazing time.

I knew we had made a good choice when I noticed a tall dark and handsome basketball player, previously connected to the Kardashians, also staying there.

When you enter you feel like you have stepped back in time to the days of Mad Men. I’m pretty sure Don Draper flew through this terminal.

The staff is dressed in period appropriate attire, and the red carpet and mod-white walls welcome you into a mid century modern experience.

After we took our bags to our room, we needed to eat. The only place with room was the rooftop bar, and that worked out better than planned. Our table was right next to an infinity pool over looking the tarmac.

We sat at a high top table at the bar and our food was delivered in old school trays, just like the good old days. I had the tacos and my husband ordered the burger. I’m happy to report that unlike most airport food, this was actually tasty.

Outside the hotel is an old airplane that has been turned into a bar. We had to check it out, and it felt like a movie set.

We did not get to linger because we were beyond exhausted, but to get to your room, you have to walk down long tunnels.

The walkway to your room feels like something out of this world.

It felt kind of like sky walks you would see on The Jetsons.

Everything is gold and branded with TWA. The elevator, the floor, and your room is completely on brand for a now defunct airline.

The bed was comfy and the bathroom had everything we needed.

Plus, we did not have to pack up and hail a taxi back to JFK. We just walked through the concourse to security.

I hated to leave. I hated to leave a flipping airport hotel.

How can this even be possible? Attention to detail. Enough glamour. Good service.

I hated to be late getting home, but the delay turned into some very tasty lemonade.
